A few months ago my sister asked me for a list of book recommendations. This is what I gave her. I left off a couple of good ones that I already knew she'd read, but here's what came to mind to suggest to her. They aren't in any special order.
Classic-type books:
Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy
Hard Times, Charles Dickens (pretty short)
Our Mutual Friend, Charles Dickens (long)
Till We Have Faces, C.S. Lewis (totally weird for the whole first half, but hold out, the end is phenomenal and makes it all worthwhile)
Ben Hur, Lew Wallace (long)
A Long Fatal Love Chase, Louisa May Alcott (pretty short, and you won't be able to put it down once you start)
The Scarlet Pimpernel, Emmuska Orczy (goes really quickly because it's so fun)
The Time Machine, H.G. Wells (very short)
The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis
Really Fun Books:
The Blue Castle, L.M. Montgomery
Stargirl, Jerry Spinelli
The Goose Girl, Shannon Hale
The Princess Academy, Shannon Hale
Goose Chase, Patrice Kindl
Danny the Champion of the World, Roald Dahl
The Ordinary Princess, M.M. Kaye (super short)
Sorcery and Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot, Patricia C. Wrede
Book of a Thousand Days, Shannon Hale (super fun and reads really quickly)
Fairest, Gail Carson Levine
Modern Fiction:
The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Mitch Albom (pretty short)
Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach (really short)
84, Charing Cross Road, Helene Hanff (really short)
Non-fiction:
The Hiding Place, Corrie Ten Boom
The Five Love Languages, Gary Chapman
Letters, Marjorie Hinckley
